“I do not have breasts, why pretend?”
At age 69, Kathy Bates had to face many health concerns. After an ovarian cancer 14 years ago, the famous American actress, Oscar winner for her role in “Misery”, underwent a double mastectomy in 2012. At the time she had just learned the cancellation of her series, “Harry’s Law”. On the Web MD website, she remembers: “It was a terrible time.”
And after the operation, the doctors discovered another disease: lymphedema of the arms, that is to say a swelling caused by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid. There is no treatment at this time. Twice a week, Kathy must wear compression sleeves to reduce symptoms.
The actress, who plays in “American Horror Story”, made the choice not to be operated again from the chest. “I joined the women’s flat club as they say, I do not have breasts, why pretend, it does not matter.” She only wears prostheses if she needs them for a role. “I feel incredibly lucky to be alive.”
